If your Windows PC is running slow and laggy then this free, ultimate how to guide will teach you how to speed up windows. We are not responsible for any damage you cause to your PC.
To speed up windows, clean up temporary files.
To delete the basic temporary files, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. You can also check the other options – If the other options are massive file sizes, go ahead and delete them! Also, go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\ and delete all the files in there (Windows XP Only). Make sure to remove items from the recycle bin afterwards!
Another way to speed up windows is to defrag your hard drive.
This will move files on your hard drive close together so your PC can access them quicker, therefore speeding up windows and saving battery usage. (It doesn’t move folders and files on windows, it moves their data closer together on the hard drive) To access the windows default disk defragment software, navigate to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragment. It may take along long time depending how big your hard drive is. If you want a better defragment, use Auslogics Disk Defrag and Select “Defrag & Optimize”
Note: Do NOT defrag if you have an SSD drive – an SSD drive contains no moving parts and will not speed up windows!
Remove any unused software.
The more software you install, the more clogged your hard drive and registry is. To remove unused software, go to Start > Control Panel. With Control panel in classic view, click “Add or Remove Programs” and uninstall the uneeded software. It should also show you how much disk space software is using which is a nice feature. Be careful not to remove stuff you need, like your Internet browser or Windows updates! Google something if you do not recognize it.
Minimize unwanted applications running when you turn on your PC.
If multiple programs such as Skype, Windows Live Messenger and Adobe Updates always appear when you turn on your computer, we can put a stop to that! Simply press the Windows Key + R to bring up the Run dialog. Type msconfig and press enter. When the ms config window pops up, click the startup tab and delete stuff you don’t need coming up at startup such as Java and Adobe’s auto updater programs. This will speed up windows startup a lot. Be careful not to remove important start up objects like your virus software or graphics drivers. If you’re unsure about applications such as ctfmon.exe then look up on Google to see whether their OK to disable or not.
Scan for and remove any viruses.
Viruses are the bane of PCs. They’re applications designed to slow down your pc, steal information such as passwords and even format your whole hard drive resulting in losing all your files and reinstalling Windows. Don’t worry though, anti-virus systems combat these annoying little things. I recommend you install Microsoft Security Essentials – a free and effective anti-virus client. I also highly recommend you install Malware Bytes Anti Malware. It’s great for netbook users and is fast at scanning. Simply do a quick scan on Malware Bytes, or click “Scan Now” on Microsoft Security Essentials. These play a big role to speed up windows, so make sure you keep your anti virus updated, as new viruses appear everyday!
Repair your registry for errors.
The registry is a vital part of windows. It stores a lot of information and can wear down with unneeded and broken registry files. To clean your registry, Install CCleaner. It’s a great little application which can be used to perform step 1. On CCleaner, select registry then “Scan for issues”. CCleaner will scan for registry errors. Once it has done, click fix selected issues. It will ask you to create a backup which up to you but it’s recommended to select yes (incase anything goes wrong.) After saving your backup file, a dialog box will come up. If you want, you can scroll through and read about all your registry errors. However, you can just click “Fix All Selected issues” to get the job done.
Speed up windows by disabling the windows indexing feature.
The windows indexing feature scans your hard drives file system constantly to keep your searches ultra fast. However, this slows down windows dramatically. To disable this feature, press the Windows key + R and type “services.msc” in the dialog box. Once a new window pops up, scroll down and find “Windows Search” and double click it. Change the startup type to manual and click OK. Restart for it to take effect and then you’ve done a major part to speed up windows.
Disable the windows eye candy to dramatically speed up windows.
Windows looks nice with all the see through window borders and such but overall this slows down your windows computer a lot. To disable most of the eye candy, go to my computer, right click a blank space on the window and click properties. Next, click “Advanced system settings” and then click the settings button under “Performance”. Now, click the “custom” radio button on this new window and untick everything except for “Show thumbnails instead of icons, Smooth Edges of screen fonts, Smooth-scroll list boxes and Use visual styles on windows and buttons” then click OK. Bam, major speed boost.
One last thing, Install Advanced System Care. ASC is a powerful and easy to use application for all windows operating systems. It fixes up the health of your PC, stopping it from suddenly going wrong. It speeds up your PC, boosts your internet connection, reduces your startup time and much more. ASC is the ultimate choice for speed boosting!
